Turn a simple pattern into a textured, dimensional work of art.

This 3-part embroidery class takes the beloved Stitch People Halloween Cottage pattern and transforms it into something far beyond cross-stitch—a richly layered, textural piece full of depth, detail, and personality.

Whether you’re fully embracing spooky season or leaning into cozy autumn vibes, this class teaches you how to interpret the pattern through embroidery techniques, mixed materials, and creative embellishment—so your final piece feels uniquely yours. Using techniques from the book Hand-Stitched House, you’ll use embroidery AND cross-stitch to build a spooky Halloween House together!

Class Details:

🎥 Format: 3-part video class series
🏠 Finished size: Approximately 4" x 4" or larger depending on your choices
🧑🏫 Instructor: Lizzy Dabczynski-Bean, founder of Stitch People
📚 Based on: The Stitch People Halloween Cottage pattern + Hand-Stitched House techniques

What You’ll Learn — Part by Part:

Part 1: Foundations & Structure
Transfer the pattern, plan your layout, and begin building the structure of the house using foundational stitches like straight stitch, satin stitch, and basket weave. This is where the cottage takes shape and you learn how to translate a grid-based pattern into freeform embroidery.

Part 2: Texture, Detail & Dimension
This is where things get fun. Bring the house to life using a variety of stitches and techniques—granitos stitch for pumpkins, French knots for tiny details, seed stitch and overtwist for ivy, and more. You’ll also explore layering techniques like felt, appliqué, and thread variation to create depth and visual interest.

Part 3: Embellishment & Personalization
Now you make it yours. Learn how to incorporate mixed media—tulle, beads, buttons, found objects, even natural elements like twigs—to create a one-of-a-kind piece. You’ll also explore ways to customize your scene by adding people, adjusting the vibe (spooky vs. autumnal), and building a cohesive final composition.

What Makes This Class Different:

This isn’t just about learning stitches—it’s about learning how to think like an embroidery artist. You’ll learn how to:

  • Interpret a cross-stitch pattern as freeform embroidery
  • Choose stitches intentionally based on texture and visual effect
  • Combine thread, fabric, and found materials for dimension
  • Build a piece that feels layered, tactile, and alive
What You’ll Walk Away With:

By the end of the series, you’ll have a finished embroidered Halloween (or autumn!) cottage—rich with texture, personality, and detail. More importantly, you’ll walk away with a completely new skillset you can apply to any house portrait or Stitch People pattern moving forward.
