The Broad Strokes

Here's a quick and dirty rundown of how our licensing program (and our intellectual property generally) works:

You're more than welcome to make and sell finished cross-stitch portraits using Stitch People patterns! Many stitchers have started up Etsy shops to market and sell finished portraits.

Please do not sell any custom patterns, unless you're part of our licensing program (which is what this page will eventually outline). Custom patterns are considered derivative works for copyright purposes, and selling them would infringe on our copyright. We're honored you like the Stitch People style for cross-stitch characters, but letting people sell custom patterns without having some of the proceeds flow back to us sort of defeats the purpose of our business. There are many other ways to design cross-stitch characters that aren't in the Stitch People style—for example, check out PixlPeople's unique style. Feel free to come up with your own unique style and build a business around it!

If you're selling finished portraits, we'd love if you gave us a shout out in your shop in a way that makes it clear you're using our patterns and style, but are not affiliated with Stitch People. Something like "Inspired by (but not affiliated with) Stitch People" is great! The goal here is to make sure potential customers know they're buying a portrait from you, and not Stitch People.
